Frequently asked questions

What can I expect at the first appointment?

During the first appointment there will be a brief, but thorough consultation covering your medical history, occupation and lifestyle to ascertain the treatment required. A full postural assessment will also be completed.

What do I wear?

Loose fitting comfortable clothing is best. Sports shorts and a vest top are ideal as this allows access to areas of the body that require treatment. It is advisable that females wear a bra that unfastens at the back rather than an over the head as this allows for easier treatment of the upper back and shoulders. Clients are draped with towels at all times, with only the area to be treated exposed. In this way you will be kept warm, comfortable and secure.

Are there any conditions that would prevent me from receiving treatment?

There are some conditions that are contraindicated to massage to avoid further risk to yourself and to the therapist. It is advisable to avoid massage if you are suffering from any of the following:

  • Cold, flu or fever

  • Infectious skin diseases

  • Thrombosis

  • Heart conditions

  • Haemophilia

  • When taking blood thinning medication

  • Pregnancy

  • Under the influence of alcohol or recreational drugs

  • Recent acute trauma, (fracture, dislocation or severe bruising)

Other conditions may allow for massage to be performed with precaution:

  • Varicose Veins

  • Myositis Ossificans

  • Open wounds

Other conditions may also be contraindicated. If you have a concern, please contact me to discuss further.

Allergies and massage oils.

I only use a hypoallergenic lotion free from nut extracts or other allergens. If you have any concerns, please contact me or, if you would like to bring a lotion of your own I'll be happy to use that.

What can I expect following massage?

Massage aims to improve the condition that you have come to have treated, however there can be secondary effects, you may or may not feel:

  • Tired or energised

  • Tearful or joyous

  • Increased bowel and bladder activity

  • nausea

  • light headed

  • changes in sleep pattern
